Weekly Market Update, February 29, 2016

Presented by Mark Gallagher

General market news
• The yield on the 10-year Treasury opened at 1.76 percent early Monday morning, the same level as last Monday, after swinging between a high of 1.81 percent and a low of 1.64 percent last week. The rest of the yield curve moved similarly, seemingly struggling to find a short-term direction.
• Led by small-cap stocks, domestic equities continued their push higher last week, with the Russell 2000 Index gaining 2.73 percent. Large-cap stocks also fared well, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq indices delivering gains of 1.62 percent and 1.93 percent, respectively.
• Several key economic reports released last week suggested that the economy continues to grow, albeit at a relatively slow pace. The numbers for both durable goods and revised fourth-quarter gross domestic product came in slightly above estimates.
